‘Endless Paperwork’ that is actually playful – Aaron Tilley about his winning image in Still Life Category
Meet Aaron Tilley, Still Life Category Winner of the Spotlight Awards 2018! Aaron is based in London but his conceptual and sophisticated style has captivated various clients worldwide. Aaron’s photography conveys an abstract take on day-to-day objects that creates a surreal world of its own.
Production Paradise: Tell us about the winning image – the idea behind it, how was it shot?
Aaron Tilley: The image was created for Kinfolk Magazine as a part of a series illustrating an article on business tips and paperwork. This particular image was to go alongside a section on endless legal contracts.
The subject matter could have been seen as mundane and monotonous and I wanted to create a series that was elegant and interesting, which is not something you might expect from paperwork! Working with the brilliant set designer Sandy Suffield, we chose a sophisticated color palette for the set and aimed to keep the composition simple but very considered.
Production Paradise: How would you describe your style?
Aaron Tilley: I would describe my style as conceptual, sophisticated and playful.
Production Paradise: How did you end up behind the lens? Tell us about your career path.
Aaron Tilley: I first had an introduction to photography whilst studying at Art School. From the first moment I set foot in the photographic studio, I felt captivated by the notion of being able to tell a story with a single still image. I could create any scenario I wanted, and from there I was hooked.
Production Paradise: What do you think is necessary to become a successful commercial photographer?
Aaron Tilley: I think to be successful as a commercial photographer you need to have patience and be dedicated, and always push yourself to do creative personal work too. I think this is really important as it informs your commercial work, and it allows you to develop a style that comes naturally.
Production Paradise: We believe you are not resting on your laurels – what are you working on now?
Aaron Tilley: At the moment I’m working on a few different projects: personal, editorial and commercial, which is a really great balance to have. Also, I am working on my first book.
Production Paradise: The Spotlight awards had a judge’s panel composed of potential clients for commercial photographers – did that influence your choice of image(s) selected for your entry?
Aaron Tilley: It didn’t really influence my decision of which images I submitted. I went for ones which I felt were strongest for the category, and that were particular favorites of mine.
Production Paradise: What made you want to participate in these Awards?
Aaron Tilley: I think the panel of brilliant judges helped make me want to participate.
