showcase new york issue 182 Oct 2009Featuring creative talent and services from the most exciting production locations
Welcome to the latest Showcase New York, brought to you by Production Paradise. We present the very best of the Big Apple's visual media industry, with more information in our dedicated Film and Photo directories.
In a break from our usual editorial format we present a pictorial homage to the great fashion and portrait photographer Irving Penn, who died at his Manhattan home on October 7th.
Penn's work has influenced and inspired generations of photographers, designers and industry professionals alike, shaping fashion in the public eye as precious few artists can hope to achieve. His portraiture work reflected a master's talent for light and composition that revealed hidden faces in even the world's most ubiquitous personalities, while a gift for presenting 'unknowns' with a certain allure and exoticism equally cemented his reputation as a true pioneer behind the lens.

George Productions New York photo production
George Productions recently embraced an interesting set of castings that made for a break from its usual fashion and lifestyle campaigns.
"What I like about this kind of casting is you have to stretch outside of your normal comfort zone and explore more," explains Kim Handley. "This ends up taking you to places and people you'd never normally go to. For instance, the wrestling environment: casting these guys was hilarious, they take their appearance very seriously and give a performance in the first degree - and this was only for a casting! Asking them to go into wrestler mode for the camera was ear-shattering, with all the muscle pumping, sweating and growling that is involved. My whole crew had a blast!"
"From the wrestler character we then had to switch gears for the Shiman character, a totally different entity; quiet, serene, slow and purposeful. We were looking for someone who could hold a proper high-kick leg stance and also look good, which is a lot easier than it sounds."
"The hunters were another fun group to cast. All year long you see great looking people that you'd love to cast in something, and this was my chance to ask these guys to get into the white trash, gun-toting hunter mode. They certainly didn't disappoint! Some of them were so good we just let them keep rolling with their characters, as every facial expression, look and bon mot out of their mouths was hilarious. One of my favorite jobs by far!"

Emir Haveric and Jung von Matt Berlin teamed up with [zerone] to create the launch campaign for the new Mercedes S-Class. Emir shot the cars in-studio on seamless white, while [zerone] created the sets using solely 3D techniques. Cars and backgrounds were later combined in 2D.
The same approach was repeated for the new Audi Q7 campaign with Emir and agency Draft FCB. In this instance, additional car details had to be generated digitally and were later added to the photographic footage of the car in post.
For the Citroen C3 Picasso campaign Markus Wendler and [zerone] created seven individual car renderings to serve as a kit for the creatives at Euro RSCG to customise a series of individual ads.
