Interview with Gokce Erenmemisoglu – Spotlight Awards Food & Drink Category winner


The winners of the Spotlight Awards for Photographic Excellence have been announced and we will publish a series of interviews, to give more insights about these award-winning photographers and their images.

Gokce Erenmemisoglu, Spotlight Awards Winner in Food & Drink Category, is a multi award-winning photographer based in New York City. As a several-times Epica, Cannes Lions, Golden Drum, and NYFest award-winner, he also won the Gourmand Best Cookbook Photography Award in Paris in 2008.

Production Paradice: Tell us about the winning image: the idea behind it, how was it shot?

Gokce: I wanted to play with figures, textures, and shapes freely in a way that I could sort of mislead the viewer’s perception. The shoot itself was quite easy to do for me but the idea and finding the right materials after, that was the challenge.

Production Paradise: How would you describe your style?

Gokce: Clean and graphic images have always been my style in my professional work. I always sought graphically strong food images, I liked to play with shapes and textures instead of shooting only appetizing photographs as a food photographer. I love mixing my still-life photographer reflexes with food photography. This “Egg Yolk” series of mine is a result of this.

Production Paradise: How did you end up behind the lens? Tell us about your career path.

Gokce: I started assisting a British photographer in 1993. Worked patiently and waited for the right moment to start my career for 8 years. In 2000, I started doing editorial stuff and in 2004 I signed up with an agent.

Production Paradise: What do you think is necessary to become a successful commercial photographer?

Gokce: You got to follow the photography trends and improve yourself accordingly, every single day. Because photography style has a fashion. It evolves and changes. And finally, and most importantly, you got to let yourself to build up your own style and stick to it.

Production Paradise: We believe you are not resting on your laurels – what are you working on now?

Gokce: I just finished a cookbook. And now I am back with the “egg yolk” project and planning to add new images to the series.

Production Paradise: The Spotlight awards had a judge’s panel composed of potential clients for commercial photographers – did that influence your choice of image(s) selected for your entry?

Gokce: It affected, of course. The list was quite serious. But I didn’t choose my images accordingly, I must say.

Production Paradise: What made you want to participate in these Awards?

Gokce: As an ex-member, I always thought this is a great platform to be in. I love my images and I wanted to share it through Production Paradise.
