What is a photograph? My main interest is exploring how the viewer engages with a photographic image, particularly how the viewer will readilly believe the veracity of the image. Generally an assumption is made – there is a causal link between a real subject and the photographic image – the camera never lies.
The context of the images changes the nature of the engagement, there may well be a causal link, people may be one link though images devoid of people may have their own traces and cues; these cues may well be defined by individual memory or experience. My work shows how easily the viewer can be diverted from the ‘truth’.
The cues in the images could be seen as trivial diversions; responses may vary depending on prejudices, everything could be other than it seems.
