Prodigious’ Art Buyer Stefano Gruarin and the key factors of eye-catching photography
We spoke with Stefano Gruarin, Milan-based art buyer at Prodigious (Publicis Groupe), about beauty photography and the Spotlight Awards, where Stefano judged the Beauty Category. Read on to find out how to pick an award-worthy image and more.
Production Paradise: Could you explain to us what your role entails as an art buyer at Prodigious-Publicis Groupe?
Stefano Gruarin: In my role as an art buyer in the Publicis Group I select photographers and visualizers for print or digital campaigns. Lately, I have started to work on animations and short videos for the web and working for integrated campaigns, and that makes my job more exciting.
Production Paradise: How has your background and previous work experience prepared you to judge beauty photography?
Stefano Gruarin: My background in this area starts with my love for art and design that made me appreciate clean images and gave me the ability to study different points of view. I had the chance to work for years on Garnier and other brands in the cosmetics and toiletries market. The research has always been an ongoing task and I love to be updated on all trends.
Production Paradise: How do you find new talent?
Stefano Gruarin: I manage the scouting in two different ways: I review proposals coming from different agents and photographers, or I personally get in touch with my contacts. I also search on the web or in magazines. The Production Paradise platform is becoming more and more interesting for me.
Production Paradise: What are you looking for in imagery when judging the beauty category?
Stefano Gruarin: The picture must be eye-catching, trigger emotions and get my attention. Truthfulness, dynamism and the way the photographer used lights to enhance the subject are key. I strongly believe casting is very important too. I love photographers who dare to shoot very particular faces beyond the classic beauty.
Production Paradise: What would be your advice for photographers looking to diversify their clientele in the beauty industry?
Stefano Gruarin: I think they definitely should study the client they want and approach the process accordingly. They should then present, through their imagery, their own brand vision.
Production Paradise: How do you think Production Paradise Spotlight Awards for Photographic Excellence will benefit photographers?
Stefano Gruarin: Visibility. Production Paradise is a global platform followed by an increasing number of professionals. Among these, there are creatives looking for ideas and a more international vision.
