The Art Director leads the in-house graphics team of 5 in establishing the overall concept and visual appearance for any and all materials that represent CTG programs, including productions, theatres, events, fundraising, educational and more. The Art Director develops visual strategies and campaign concepts used to guide the creation of print and digital materials promoting a range of theatrical projects for Center Theatre Group and its three venues: Ahmanson Theatre, Mark Taper Forum and Kirk Douglas Theatre. Projects include, but are not limited to, advertising, study guides, signage, brochures, posters, displays, invitations, event kits, promotional giveaways, sales materials and corporate identity. The Art Director is responsible for ensuring that all materials strictly uphold the CTG Brand Style Guidelines.
Work closely with Senior Marketing and Communications Staff – Director of Marketing & Communications, Ticket Sales Director, Media and Communications Director, Marketing Director and Content Strategy Director – to establish strategy and priority in promoting CTG projects and productions.Performs in a key role for the development of overall strategies, plans and sales/promotional policies to support CTG’s mission and vision, maintain current audiences and build audiences for the future.
Lead the design team efficiently in a collaborative and professional work environment. Oversee projects from visual concept development to production of the materials, including the creation and maintenance of strong proofing procedures to ensure proper execution and timing of projects.
Facilitate and manage a strong working relationship between the graphics department and other departmental liaisons.
Work with the Marketing Leadership Team, Artistic Staff and Producers in order to determine campaign strategies, departmental requirements and art/presentation concepts, prior to coordinating the creative activities.
Participate in strategy meetings and brief members of the design team.
Along with Senior Design Manager, regularly review projects produced by department for quality, consistency, appropriate usage of design/branding elements. Review and approve proofs of materials developed by the design team.
Oversee relationships with print vendors to ensure that quality, budgets and schedules are met.
Along with Senior Design Manager, recommend hiring of photographers, artists and designers for projects.
Work closely with assigned staff to schedule and monitor all projects, and to provide time and cost estimates.
Advise on technical/visual recommendations on projects
Maintain department archives (digital and print)
As Center Theatre Group provides a dynamic working environment, other duties may be assigned by the Director of Marketing & Communications. Employees are expected to be flexible and responsive to changes in the scope of their duties.
5+ years of progressive professional working experience in graphic design, with most recent experience as an Art/Creative Director.
Graduate of an accredited graphic design program.
Previous experience leading a team and working interdepartmentally.
Experience in a nonprofit performing arts organization is preferred, and an appreciation and enthusiasm for live theatre and entertainment is required.
MS Outlook, Word and Excel
Proficiency in Adobe CS6: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects / HTML and Flash. Dreamweaver a plus
Project Management Software such as Basecamp, RoboHead or similar is a plus
Strong design skills: layout, type, photography, graphic elements.
Strong communications skills and the ability to effectively lead a team.
Attention to detail and graphics standards.
Ability to manage projects, scheduling and staff.
Expert knowledge of collateral production for both print and animated digital media (digital advertising and social media assets).
An understanding of best UX/UI practices.
Strong communication skills in English and ability to work with people of diverse/multidisciplinary backgrounds.
