DESIGN DIRECTOR for Golfweek Magazine

Position Summary:
Golfweek magazine is seeking a design director to lead its next generation of print and digital publications. The design director is responsible for the look and quality of a weekly print magazine and two weekly digital publications that support Golfweek’s position as the leading voice in the game. The design director will work closely in the Orlando office with the editor, managing editor and staff writers. This is a busy job that requires strategic thinking, an eye for visual excellence, exceptional attention to detail and strong production skills.

Role and Responsibilities:
• Envision and create industry-leading weekly print and digital publications using superior visual, design and production skills
• Work with staff writers and editors to develop timely and attractive print and digital publications
• Complete projects within scheduled timeline
• Lead, participate and assist in weekly editorial conference call and other idea-generating meetings
• Manage staff photographer and freelancer(s)
• Oversee freelance budget
• Other duties as assigned

Education Required:
• Bachelor’s degree or 3-5 years’ related experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
• Highly productive designer who meets deadlines in an environment with changing priorities and deadlines to accommodate the news cycle
• Exhibit a high level of creativity in designing print and digital products
• Flexible, open-minded, enthusiastic team player who can identify and solve problems
• Self-starter with a thorough understanding of design, typography and printing concepts
• Exceptional eye for detail as a designer and editor
• Thorough working knowledge of libel law, copyright restrictions and Associated Press style
• Comprehensive understanding of four-color, prepress and print production
• Exceptional design experience in publishing, ideally in a lead or supervisory role at a magazine
• Excellent computer skills in relevant art and design-software packages, including InDesign, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
• Ability to work on a Mac-based publishing system
• Present final page designs to editor and managing editor for approval
• Develop contacts with Getty and AP managers and photographers
• Able to take direction, think strategically and manage time efficiently
• Self-motivated and open and able to act on constructive feedback
• Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills
• Willing to work late-night Sunday and long days Monday and Tuesday to accommodate magazine deadlines
• Extensive golf knowledge, including playing experience
