About
Alain Proust is arguably one of South Africa's best photographer. Being one of the industry leaders, his work covers many fields from photography of the world's leading hotels to in-studio advertising stills and panoramic landscapes
Born in France and now living in Cape Town it is of no surprise that the Wine and Food Industries are perhaps his greatest love. He has developed his own methods of lighting bottles and is always happy to pass his wealth of knowledge on to aspiring photographers. Also in partnership with two other renowned photographers at Salisbury Studios in Woodstock, the majority of his in-studio work involves beverage photography, mostly that of beer. His food photography is also unsurpassed and he has teamed up with some of the best Chefs around to produce award winning Cookbooks.
His books don't stop at food however, and apart from books on Cape Town, Cape Dutch Houses, Mauritius and others, he has teamed up with Graham Viney (one of Cape Town's finest Interior Decorator) to produce one of South Africa's best architectural Coffee Table Books, Colonial Houses of South Africa. With architectural photography such as this he has been approached to do work by some of the leading hotels of the world:
Orient Express Hotels worldwide; some of Richard Branson's Hotels such as Necker, his private Island in the Carribean; Royal Livingstone in Victoria Falls as well as many exclusive lodges all over the Okavango and in the Sabi Sands such as Londolozi, Sabi Sabi & Ulusaba. In the last few months, he has been shooting the new Taj Hotel in Cape Town as well as the Coral Hotel and very recently also Ellerman House

Alain Proust advertising photographers
"My location work is counterbalanced by technical studio photography, like pack shots and liquid in motion photography which are very challenging but satisfying experiments.
Advertising work is intense and very demanding but short-lived especially these days, for social media productions. As a creative person, I’ve had to find a way to express myself on a longer-term and have longer-lasting projects. That is how I found myself an author (photographically) of around 30 publications on different subjects (cookbooks, colonial architecture, Winelands etc..).
I am sometimes asked if I intend to retire and my answer is: retire from what? I am living my passion and it has been a fantastic journey so far. Why end it?"
