Substantial is looking for an inspired product designer to join growing office in San Francisco.

As a product designer, you understand what it takes to execute user-centered design ideas from a strategic, interaction and visual design perspective. You can develop the strategy and structure of a product and possess an innate ability to solve complex problems through elegant solutions. You captivate clients during the development process and are mature enough not to freak out over their feedback. You lead the design process collectively with technical team members to bring breakthrough work to life.

You are a proven interaction and visual designer. You understand the role of strategy within experience design. You create brilliant ideas that differentiate brands and products. You go all in for the user to change what isn’t working through your ability to lead, direct and collaborate across external as well as internal teams. You inspire clients by destroying conventional wisdom in order to create demand for them, Substantial and yourself.

You have a creative portfolio that clearly showcases interface design across multiple devices and applications
You have 4-6 years of digital and/or advertising design/art direction experience
You have 2-4 years experience in client services or agency environment
You possess high levels of craft and are skilled with all standard design tools and applications
You have experience solving design problems within technology platforms
You understand digital marketing, e-commerce, enterprise, and/or digital product design
You are familiar with the capabilities of established and emerging technology platforms (includes OS, mobile devices and tablets, specific hardware, etc.)
You have a proven track record of creative solutions within established interface practices (includes OS, mobile devices and tablets, etc.)
You understand and support UX design and information architecture best practices
You deliver polished, prepared digital assets for a variety of platforms
You are professional, expert, and confident when presenting to clients
You have strong communication and interpersonal skills
You play well with others

To independently lead and coordinate projects and teams, resolving issues along the way
To partner with project teams to evaluate and prioritize feature work
To lead interaction design on projects
To develop user experience and information architecture strategies across multiple clients and projects
To establish and utilize consistent interaction libraries and digital design practices
To support and enhance information relationships and navigation models at the product, screen, and module levels
To learn FROM USERS (both qualitatively and quantitatively) what makes a design compelling, usable, addictive
To play a role in pioneering a new way of working better, faster and smarter that combines the best of a traditional design approach with the best of agile and lean software and product development
To mentor, train, and share experience to foster leadership skills throughout the company
To collaborate and ideate with team members from design, product strategy, and software development
To work with a variety of new technologies, evaluating emerging trends and incorporating them into your work as appropriate
To create award-winning digital experiences that help people do amazing things with grace and panache
To work with hyper-talented people with diverse backgrounds and skill sets who are cool and nice, from whom you can learn things and whom you can teach things, too, and with whom you can discover and invent things together

Products that aren’t designed with the end users in mind
Dumb, old, slow, wasteful waterfall processes that produce things that aren't compelling
Processes that don’t efficiently embrace change and new ideas
Traditional creative pretensions and dogma
Design that looks pretty but doesn't really solve problems or meet a client's objectives
Poorly managed projects that result in death marches and hours of compulsory, uncompensated overtime

To work on visible, awesome projects
To occasionally travel to interesting places, but because you want to - not because you have to
Great colleagues, office, location, and parties
A flexible vacation policy and humane work environment and style
Community involvement including hosted events, conferences, and more
