Chris Fortuna has been producing fascinating fashion images for decades and here is how he overcomes the challenges of being fashion photographer:
‘’For sure there are many challenges new photographers face in the fashion and celebrity field. I think the real issue is learning how to define yourself and your work. The question is, what aspects of your image separate you from the rest? It’s important to be an individual – visually, but at the same time you need to make sure you are producing images that work within your specific market. It can take a long time to really find your niche within the commercial photography world, so it’s important to make a conscious effort in defining your visual style.’’
Fashion and beauty photographer Duo Caleb & Gladys about their work:
“The most important skill a fashion or beauty photographer should have is an aesthetic eye, but of course with the technical skills to back up whatever mood you are trying to bring forth.
As an advice for aspiring photographers we mention to never stop learning new things and always strive to do better in your next shoot. We believe it’s essential to reflect on the mistakes you make and improve on them. Most importantly, take the time to come up with original ideas to make your work stand out.”
Hear from Chris Fortuna about creating the right atmosphere for a successful fashion shoot:
‘’I actually give very little direction to models and that is part of my strategy to achieve a great image. Once someone is relaxed they can really get into the moment creatively and let that special energy happen. In fact the first shot of the day I always consider a throw away since I use that time to break down barriers that may exist between the model and the camera. In the end, even when stressful things happen, on set it’s really the photographer’s job to stay cool and get the shot. Once everyone leaves the shoot no matter what negative things may have happened, in the end all will remember that images have been produced. So for me all I focus on is getting the shot. When that happens I feel like the shoot was a success.’’
Tips for aspiring fashion, hair and beauty photographers from an award-winning Brazilian photographer Caesar Lima:
‘’Test as often as possible. It’s ok to get inspired by other photographer’s work but you need to develop your own style; shoot, shoot, shoot every day. It’s like going to the gym, hard work pays off. Tip: start a Project 365 - one picture a day. Not only will you exercise your eyes, but you will get a lot of PR from your blog and social media.’’
