Philip Gatward advertising photographers
After years of planning, Philip Gatward spent six weeks at the end of 2009 living with and documenting the beautiful and striking indigenous tribes of South Omo.
“I knew that I didn’t want to make beautiful, prettified pictures in Ethiopia. I wanted to make portraits of these extraordinarily self-aware sitters that were my response to the subject, but without the hundreds of colour adjustments that I may make in my other work. Above all, I wanted to make respectful portraits.”
His project, entitled 'Ethnograph', was exhibited in London this summer and won a first place in the International Photography Awards 2010.

London: Philip Gatward
“Jackets on? Jackets off? A phrase you're familiar with? My answer is always 'lets do both.’"
For over 10 years, Philip Gatward has been capturing the confidence and mood of business leaders in the UK and across Europe with his corporate photography. His experience shows in his work, which is always efficient, fresh and sometimes award-winning.
Blue chip chairman to nurse, NGO volunteer to shop floor worker, Philip excels at nurturing a persuasive performance from someone who is not always comfortable in front of the camera. The proof is his acclaimed series on the tribes of the South Omo Valley that has just won first place in the International Photography Awards 2010.
Recent work includes a commission for VSA Partners to shoot the cover of Mohawk Paper’s gorgeous, sexy exploration ‘Bike: Examined’.
