"When the poor become disenfranchised they have no reserves to build upon. When the same thing happens to the privileged it's a mere inconvenience, for they know they can start anew."

Deeply touched by all the physical disasters throughout the world, photographer Andrea Blanch wanted to do a shoot that portrayed these calamities. "The homeless feeling hopeless, marginalised and fearful; one can't help but wonder what these victims cherish most, what they hold most dear, the one thing they would save."

"While shooting Victoria, (the image of the girl in the coral dress), I wanted her to emote, so began telling her she had just lost her home. No reaction. Then I told her she had no more money or possessions, that she couldn't go home to her parents and that even they couldn't help her; again no reaction. Finally, all of a sudden feeling panic and desperation, she began to cry... and 'click'."

Known for producing sexually charged photographs, Andrea Blanch's most recent series 'Shirts' takes an unexpected and certainly refreshing approach to capturing sexual intimacy.

The concept, which was to take photographs of a man who changes shirts with every sexual partner, was changed when the female models approached declined to appear nude. To solve the problem, the roles were reversed: with the men now placed as the objects of desire, Blanch was able to create provocative imagery without being altogether sexually explicit.

Generally thought of as "the woman who knows how to photograph women", Blanch has proven with this series that her talents extend far beyond the gender gap.

'Too Young' is an exploration of the young male as a unique sexual being, rather than a pastiche of the expectations of modern culture. The photos in this series are informed by Andrea Blanch's solid understanding of the human form through her investment in fashion photography, as well as her intrepid investigation into what comprises male sexuality.

The boys, not unlike models, are draped in elegant scarves. However, their bare chests are exposed, and so too are their vulnerabilities as not yet fully developed men. The series addresses a question that is increasingly relevant as the age of sexual activity lowers and advertising continues to press against the barrier of exploitation: How young is too young?

    New York [USA]: Andrea Blanch

Photographer Andrea Blanch's work is diverse, powerful and sensual. Beginning as an assistant for Avedon and working with Rolling Stone, Johnny Walker, Vogue, and Valentino, as well as for Universal Films and such noted personalities as Bill Murray, Glenn Close, Eli Weisel, and Monica Belluci, Blanch has only recently begun to pursue the many visual interests that inspire her.

Her love of painting, fashion, and portraiture has created a broad body of work which continues growing in terms of style and content. Her experimentation in the digital darkroom has created new, unique conceptions including a sell-out gallery exhibition of photo-montages.

She is currently working on her second book, focusing on the subject of youth, and also on a side project that deals with the end of relationships.
