Julia Bostock currently divides her time between London and Suffolk, where she has a studio. Having grown up surrounded by art and photography, and having completed a BA in graphic design, Julia made a career in art direction and graphic design. The involvement she had on every side of a shoot later gave her photography a unique creativity and a natural ability to story tell.
She loves directing videos and small films to add another dimension to her photography. Julia’s energetic and fresh style gives her an ability to sidestep the conventional, whether working with well-known brands or her own reportage. Julia's playful vision and irreverent approach drew her naturally to work with children and she quickly carved a name for herself in children's fashion.
She brings this same energy into her photographs of subjects of all ages, and effortlessly brings out the child from within. She puts her subjects at ease and loves to get to the core of the subjects' spirit and to tell their story through her pictures. She is known for creating a unique blend of fashion and reportage in her work. Her images reflect the curious imagination and spontaneity of children and create worlds in which they appear both captivated and natural.
Her international vision, European connections and love for travel have defined her work and forged strong working relationships with clients like Vogue Bambini, Adidas and Nestle. She is passionate about her work and is always looking forward to new challenges.

"Since the days of Julia Margaret Cameron, the number of male photographers, both amateur and professional, has vastly outnumbered women. The camera gave women the ability to record and comment on life with freedom and insight and to reveal a unique perspective.
In my personal projects I love exploring culture and heritage through the lifestyle and traditions of people around the world. From the amazing traditions of the “Guardians" in the Camargue I was able to recognise and pick out a young cow girl who was as capable as the traditional male horsemen but who stood out not only for her confidence but her sense of calm, poise and self-possession. Another pushier (male) photographer had spotted her at the same event and was trying to muscle me out of the way, but the innate unspoken and unthreatening communication that two women can silently create between them enabled me to capture some of the most powerful portraits of that series. I then turned this into a commercial project for Liberty.
Gaining trust and using my intuition has always been key to my work from photographs of couples undergoing IVF treatment to the remote crofting families in the Outer Hebrides.
As an art director initially and having studied painting and photography I instinctively understand what makes a good composition, but at the end of the day it is story telling that lies at the heart of my work, giving expression to the lives, passions and stories of my subjects."

Title: Grumpy Girl
"This was part of a series of documentary photographs on the Outer Hebrides.
Inspired by Paul Strand who visited the islands back in the 1950’s I wanted to make a study of the people who lived and worked there.
I travelled up to the far north of Scotland to document the modern day weavers and how they live their lives, just as he did then. Still using traditional skills I was interested in the way the incredible craftsmanship had been passed down to the younger generations but in relatively unchanged surroundings.
The home of Harris Tweed is now a vibrant community proud of its traditions, where weaving of the iconic cloth is both a flexible source of family income and a link to the past and landscape.
Having photographed the grandfather and his son, I remembered that he'd told me that the grandchildren were inside the house but asleep. They were woken up and bought into the chilly air of my canvas studio set up inside the shed where the father was alternating weaving with delivering new born lambs. She was a little bit grumpy and really didn't want to have her picture taken. Somehow I persevered and got this picture of her."
