Alex Waber is a Vancouver-based photographer with over 15 years of experience.

He has captured products for brands like Arcteryx, No Reception Club, Tuft and Paw, Section 35, and Purple Brand.

In his spare moments, he spends time with his frequent collaborator, art director, and stylist, Monika Wiatrowska, to create dreamy still life scenes featuring florals, found objects, and favorite perfumes.

This year, Alex has expanded his portfolio with the Arcteryx Regear campaign, focusing on gear maintenance and recycling, and contributed to a Wired Magazine splash page in collaboration with Kristen Roose. His work has been featured in Vogue, Wired, Rolling Stone, The Guardian, and Montecristo Magazine.

For more than 15 years, Alex Waber has been behind the lens, crafting compelling commercial campaigns for a diverse array of Canadian companies. The collaborative aspect of each project stands out as one of the most gratifying elements for him – working in tandem with clients, art directors, stylists, and models to create shared visions.

With a background in cinema, Alex possesses the ability to navigate and coordinate large teams effectively, ensuring that projects not only stay on track but also achieve the intended creative vision. His extensive experience ranges from studio work to outdoor adventures and everything in between.

He has shot campaigns for clients including Arcteryx, Tilley, and Section 35, with images published in Vogue, Complex, Forbes, Wired and The Guardian.

Featured work in this set is from two campaigns for Arcteryx, one for No Reception Club (a travel brand for parents) and one for Tuft and Paw (designer products for cats and the people who love them).

Clinton Hussey is an award-winning commercial photographer specialising in conceptual, food, still life and, recently, motion. Since 1995, he has been creating distinctive editorial and advertising imagery for brand and magazine clients in his hometown of Vancouver and abroad.

Originally a design student at Vancouver’s Emily Carr College of Art & Design, Clinton stumbled into photography at first accidentally and then with conviction as he fell for its demanding mix of creativity and technical grasp—an intense relationship he recognised from watching his father, a musician, repair his instruments with surgical skill. Though not a musician himself, Clinton has earned both Grammy and Juno nominations for his album cover designs; his photography has won multiple National Magazine Awards, as well as honours from Lotus, Applied Arts, D&AD, City & Regional Magazine Association, the Printing Industry of America, Communication Arts, PDN/Nikon, and many others.

Today, Clinton is expanding into video, creating ad campaigns for clients such as A&W, Heinz, Sleeman and McDonalds. When he is not making pictures, he is building things, and spending time on the ocean and in the mountains with his wife, Amanda—also a photographer—and their two children.

"Whenever I have a moment to myself, it's time to explore and experiment. This may be my favourite part of my job, constantly playing and creating.

In the back room of my studio they lurk various works in progress. For example, the gold shoot in this set of images started ages ago when I had a completely different idea that required only one 4x8 foot panel of gold leaf. A very calm relaxing activity, to cover a panel in such delicate material. Once one was done, it looked so good I had to make more! After that, it was a case of inviting a favourite stylist/designer (Matthew Burditt) and model (Alex from Family Management) to the studio for a day of sculptural creation. We approached the shoot with wardrobe and posing reminiscent of old masters' paintings and religious iconography, highlighted by a world of gold.

The panels are now in storage waiting along side painted canvases, giant mirrors and a million other small projects waiting to be explored.

"The beauty of photography is that it can celebrate what is in front of the camera. For a brief moment the sitter and their ideas, hopes and dreams get idolised in a sliver of time. So taking a portrait is more than saying ''Turn a little more to the left". It begins with a relationship, a conversation between the photographer and the subject. We need to get to know each other, become friends, even if just for that short period of time while we are together. The photographer has to be curious about the person and about the world, digging in to perspectives and bringing up stories, or having the subject demonstrate a process or lead a tour of a place. Once that relationship is formed, we are comfortable and we are honest with each other, I can finally add "Chin up a smidge, and turn a little more to the left"."

Portraits are what got Waber started in photography over 15 years ago, and are still one of his favourite projects to dive in to, as its always an opportunity to learn new things about the subjects and the world they inhabit.

Still life photography has been a passion of Alex Waber’s since he started in photography over 15 years ago. It is a more contemplative approach to photography, thinking about how light can play of surfaces, how depth of field can focus attention, and how colour can create a mood. Alex has shot products for No Reception Club (the luggage featured in this Spotlight), Tuft and Paw (the cats), Section 35 (the athletic wear in the locker) and many more.

When he is not shooting for clients, he is often working closely with his regular collaborator, art director and stylist Monika Wiatrowska to create dreamy still life scenes, often involving florals and found objects. They have an ongoing series about their favourite perfumes which can be seen in past issues here (or on his website). Together they love to dabble in organised chaos, the movement of textures and the interplay of changing colours. The colourful tiled image here was from a project in her back yard, shooting a slowly deteriorating bouquet through the changing light of evening.

Combining a strong in studio practice with a love of the outdoors enables Alex to seamlessly integrate studio lighting in to nature, or a very natural light in the studio. Practicing many of the sports himself, posing and shot ideas come easily to his direction. And he is generally able to keep up with the athletes he is out there shooting.

Since their inception in 2019, there have been several in-studio and on-location lifestyle shoots with professional models, both human and feline. When Waber started his career, he never expected to high-five so many cats.

When Alex isn't shooting for someone else, he and his camera can be found riding bikes, kayaking, or hiking through the mountains.
