He loves what he does and builds his team around him to reflect that further, giving not just the subjects an always-positive experience, but importantly the clients too.

2022 has been a busy year for Matthew Joseph as the advertising and commercial photography industry has got busy again! He spent much of spring shooting a variety of stills and motion projects in South Africa - the quality of light, scenery and talent there makes it an irresistible place to shoot. This included some dedicated drinks-based lifestyle stories as test work for upcoming commercial projects. He has also been busy shooting for clients in Dubai, France, Germany and across the UK.

Directing motion and films continues to play a bigger part in both Matthew’s commercial advertising work and his personal projects - there’s a creative freedom to explore beyond still images which not only fascinates Matthew but also is very welcomed by clients as the demand for content increases.

New UK representation by PROCESS is going down very well indeed and his O1-B visa is in motion to enable more shooting state-side for US clients. A busy summer awaits.

Matthew Joseph is a people-focussed advertising photographer and director based in London. Much of his work is lifestyle-based, and he is known for being able to capture ‘moments between moments’ - constantly striving for authenticity within the curated commercial world.

Since the world has gone into lockdown, Matthew has challenged himself to find creativity closer to home, rather than flying around the world every week! Despite the restrictions, 2020 was still a busy year - shooting new global campaigns for The North Face, an OOH billboard campaign for Tide Banking, the campaign for HIVE was released, and he won gold at the 2020 AOP Awards for his ‘Podo’ project. Alongside this, a few new personal projects are under way - both moving image and stills.

Some of that personal work is included in this Showcase, alongside some new lifestyle photography for outdoors lifestyle brand Glampify

"2021 has started with some optimism - we’re well used to living / working / shooting with Covid around now, productions are happening and the diary is starting to fill up. Here’s to another productive year!"

    People & lifestyle photographers

Matthew Joseph is an award-winning people-focussed advertising photographer and director. He is based in London but gladly follows his work around the world (when global pandemics permit).

"Lockdown in the UK has not stopped progress! Whilst missing flying to warmer climes, it has been a very productive time filled with not only shooting a lot of personal work - both stills and motion, but I'm also grateful to a few global clients who have trusted my work ethic, creativity and flexibility to commission a few projects both remotely (using the amazing tech we have) and on set at a safe social distance. There is always a way to keep on shooting and being creative!"

Matthew is a visual storyteller who uses his years of experience behind the camera in a huge variety of situations, cultures and climates across the world, to help connect global brands with their local audience through stills and motion. Whether on a large set full of complex lighting, cast and crew in California, or in a remote Ethiopian village with just his camera, subject and a language barrier; his keen eye for detail and an understanding of human emotion enables him to document authenticity time and time again.

He is proud to have been included in Lürzer’s Archive ‘Top 200 Ad Photographers Worldwide’ for 2017/18 and 2019/20 - he is also a finalist in the 2020 AOP Awards for his project ‘Podo’ - read more on his website.

Whether it is utilising the unique environment he finds his subject in, or focussing on the intimacy of a vulnerable face, Matthew Joseph has a deep passion for people and their stories; this is fundamental to his approach on portraiture. Cinematic, bold, and dramatic are words often used to describe his style, but it is honesty and authenticity which are the primary inspiration for any of his shoots. The final image must reflect the truth - of that moment or of the surrounding situation, and a deep understanding of lighting helps him portray this honesty in a fresh creative manner.

He has recently had portraits featured in The Times, The Guardian and British Airways Magazine and enjoys building long-term relationships with his commercial clients as he is commissioned to bring his unique take on portraiture into the advertising, music and corporate worlds as well as the charity sector.
