About
Alex Black is a New York-based Director and Photographer originally from Montreal. Fascinated by fashion as a tool for self-expression, Alex captures a sense of intimacy from her subjects by drawing out an authentic self within the poetic world crafted by her arthouse sensibilities. Her work has been influenced by being immersed in different cultures. Having grown up in Paris, she deals with beauty with an aesthetic of the past, driven by a strong sense of colour reminiscent of previous eras. Her subject matter has been influenced by living among the vibrant youth culture in Montreal and New York. She is also interested in urbanscapes as abstract shapes and forms, approaching them with the same art direction as her portraiture.
Publications include i-D, Vogue Italia, Nylon, Teen Vogue, and SHOWstudio. Clients include Milk Makeup and Obama’s MBKA foundation. She has had shows at Red Hook Labs, Theory’s flagship store, Lomography NYC, and was awarded the 2017 Emerging Photographer award.
