"I try to get outside a lot. Bike rides, hikes, kayak trips; just put me in nature and I’m happy. I’ve shot outdoor campaigns and lookbooks for brands like Arcteryx, Tilley Endurables, Section 35, and Kit and Ace.

But aside from the drama and action, one of my favourite parts of any adventure is the in between moments, friends hanging out, cooking food, waiting for boats, or being completely wiped after an epic climb. When we let our guard down and just revel in the moment. Easy to overlook but often the parts that are most remembered.

Like on a kayak trip last summer, catching fresh crabs for dinner, and while distracted by the delicious food sharing my beer with a local slug. Or on another trip, camping by possibly the buggiest lake ever, we had to drink through our mosquito nets as they’d go for any exposed skin. The sports are great, but at the end of the day, but its nothing without the people you share it with."

"Whenever I have a moment to myself, it's time to explore and experiment. This may be my favourite part of my job, constantly playing and creating.

In the back room of my studio they lurk various works in progress. For example, the gold shoot in this set of images started ages ago when I had a completely different idea that required only one 4x8 foot panel of gold leaf. A very calm relaxing activity, to cover a panel in such delicate material. Once one was done, it looked so good I had to make more! After that, it was a case of inviting a favourite stylist/designer (Matthew Burditt) and model (Alex from Family Management) to the studio for a day of sculptural creation. We approached the shoot with wardrobe and posing reminiscent of old masters' paintings and religious iconography, highlighted by a world of gold.

The panels are now in storage waiting along side painted canvases, giant mirrors and a million other small projects waiting to be explored.

Get in touch, let's make something!”

"The beauty of photography is that it can celebrate what is in front of the camera. For a brief moment the sitter and their ideas, hopes and dreams get idolised in a sliver of time. So taking a portrait is more than saying ''Turn a little more to the left". It begins with a relationship, a conversation between the photographer and the subject. We need to get to know each other, become friends, even if just for that short period of time while we are together. The photographer has to be curious about the person and about the world, digging in to perspectives and bringing up stories, or having the subject demonstrate a process or lead a tour of a place. Once that relationship is formed, we are comfortable and we are honest with each other, I can finally add "Chin up a smidge, and turn a little more to the left"."

Portraits are what got Waber started in photography over 15 years ago, and are still one of his favourite projects to dive in to, as its always an opportunity to learn new things about the subjects and the world they inhabit.

Still life photography has been a passion of Alex Waber’s since he started in photography over 15 years ago. It is a more contemplative approach to photography, thinking about how light can play of surfaces, how depth of field can focus attention, and how colour can create a mood. Alex has shot products for No Reception Club (the luggage featured in this Spotlight), Tuft and Paw (the cats), Section 35 (the athletic wear in the locker) and many more.

When he is not shooting for clients, he is often working closely with his regular collaborator, art director and stylist Monika Wiatrowska to create dreamy still life scenes, often involving florals and found objects. They have an ongoing series about their favourite perfumes which can be seen in past issues here (or on his website). Together they love to dabble in organised chaos, the movement of textures and the interplay of changing colours. The colourful tiled image here was from a project in her back yard, shooting a slowly deteriorating bouquet through the changing light of evening.

Alex photographs still life, lifestyle and fashion in Vancouver out of his studio and on location. His clients include Arcteryx, Tilley Edurables and Purple Brand Denim. His work has been featured in Vogue, Wired, Rolling Stone, The Guardian and Montecristo Magazine.

Alex Waber is passionate about the outdoors, spending most of his time off exploring the mountains and oceans around Vancouver. Supporting responsible initiatives and outdoor adventures is one of the many highlights of Waber’s career as a fashion and lifestyle photographer.

This is Arc’teryx’s process of receiving used and damaged products from customers, assessing, repairing and repurposing, and finally bringing them back out in to the world.

From the first shoot, Waber worked closely with the Arcteryx in house team to shape an aesthetic approach to the series through sticking to a specific set of lenses and lighting styles while keeping in mind a variety of image placements, like Instagram ads, magazine articles, press releases and “how-to" sections on websites.

“Late last year I had the honor of shooting Section 35's largest campaign to date.

The challenge was having only one day with our talent, Amber Midthunder, and shooting two concepts in very different locations. The first part was shot in studio, where our stylist, Monika Wiatrowska, built a living room set incorporating photographs and objects from the designer's family history.

The second concept was shot outdoors, in an industrial area, combining ideas of land, history and reclamation. In both instances for speed and efficiency we keep the lighting set up small, usually just one light augmenting the natural light of the environment, though as evening fell we were able to get a lot more dramatic. The shoot was used by Footlocker to launch the products in their stores and was published by Complex Magazine and Vogue for articles in each."

For the past nine years, Alex has frequently collaborated with stylist and art director Monika Wiatrowska on projects ranging from magazine covers to product shoots to personal work celebrating favourite objects. Presented here are several pieces for the magazine Maisoneuve, stills for a backpack for parents by No Reception Club, and a set about a favourite perfume called 'After The Flood' by Apotheker Tepe, and a classic still life of flowers and sneaky little googly eyes.

"The past few months have been almost non-stop shooting for Alex Waber, alternating in studio sessions with on location work, which has given Alex the opportunity to really explore the similarities and differences between both.

The autumnal Poplin and Co. shoot down by a marina was the most straight forward location shoot possible, a small team, a bounce and watching the sun and clouds move through the sky.

'The Garden' editorial was a step up from that, we wanted that beautiful long evening light and colourful sky so we only had a three-hour window to shoot eight looks, and had to balance flashes both subtlety for fill and dramatically for aesthetics as the light rapidly changed.

And finally, the 'Altherya' shoot, shot in a glass house with amazing views was an exercise in hiding reflections while again balancing strobe lighting with the natural light of a day of rolling clouds.”

"One of the pleasures of photography is getting the chance to see new spaces and watch things happen before your eyes. Recently Alex had two backstage passes to amazing places. The first is the Arcteryx Vancouver factory to document the ReGear production space. The campaign was to help launch the new used gear portion of their website, following a used and damaged jacket through analysis, dissection, repair and recreation as a new an unique piece. The brief was to bring a crisp and modern aesthetic, but without taking over the very busy factory lines.

The second project presented is all about local painter Shevy Levy. Over a few months, Alex has been documenting the making of her new collection of abstract oil paintings, visiting her studio, shooting the works in progress and capturing the paintings in other spaces in preparation for a show.

In both instances lighting was unreliable, the factory was filled with old fluorescents, small tungstens, and various LEDs, and the studio was a small dimly lit space with only one window on the far side. Mixing strobes and on camera flashes, Alex worked to bring a consistent aesthetic across the projects that aligned with the creative direction from both clients."

Recent lifestyle projects have brought that to the fore, shooting the trails on Mount Seymour just behind Vancouver and going on a bike trip around Kamloops where Alex had the chance to document the massive destruction by last years' forest fires and the regrowth in the grasslands surrounding them.

Another very exciting project was shooting in the Vancouver Nursery, where most of the plants for Vancouver’s public gardens are grown and maintained. Alex Waber lives in a playground, and he loves to use it. In his spare time he can be found backpacking, bike packing, day hiking and snowshoeing (and sometimes just lying on a beach) And thus he loves when he has to take his camera along to shoot a campaign.

And in to the streets of the city to shoot active wear for local brand Daub + Design. Later this year he is off to the grasslands around Kamloops for a desert adventure and the north coast of Vancouver Island for a very rainy bike ride.

Alex is always trying to find new places to shoot so that when an out of town brand calls he can right away suggest a few options that would fit their creative direction. And working with a dedicated team he is able to set up lights and covers to get the look you need, even if it is a summer shoot in the dead of winter. This drive for getting the shot on location has lead teams with full lighting rigs up the sides of snowy mountains in Whistler and deep in to forests after the rain. But I’m still a city kid with a love of style. I’ve worked with numerous hair salons, yoga studios and clothing designers to show off what they can do for you in every day life.

Curiosity leads Alex Waber’s portrait practice. He loves getting to know people through his work and bringing that out in the photograph. Though aesthetics are always important, the story of who a person is should shine through. Alex is always keen to meet people in their own environments, using their space to add depth to the images.
